China's Muslims sharpen their knives against Peking
Article Abstract:
There has been growing tension in China between Muslim and mainstream Chinese communities since the early 1980s. The situation has been particularly serious in the province of Xinjiang, where large numbers of Han Chinese have been brought in to the capital city of Urumqi in an attempt to stabilise unrest created by the Muslim Uighur community. In the strongly Islamic south of the province, the main issue creating conflict is Chinese-imposed birth control, while in the north intellectuals are opposing social inequality and labour market discrimination.

I said 'no' to the men with knives
Article Abstract:
All operations involve an element of danger, and this should be taken into account when deciding whether to have surgery. In some cases, non-specialist surgeons undertake the work simply in order to boost NHS production targets, and this can place the patient at some risk. In the case of a patient who has been advised to have a hip replacement, it may be better to wait to see whether the condition improves by itself, rather than to have an operation, particularly if the patient is still relatively young.

We will pray for the 'saint in backless Versace.' (impact on Muslims of death of Diana, Princess of Wales)(Column)
Article Abstract:
Muslims across the world are experiencing genuine grief at the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. They greatly admired her beauty and glamour, and also acknowledged that she seemed to be independent of politics and ideology. However, Muslims also regard her with considerable ambiguity. They respected her humanitarian work, but found it hard to reconcile her concern for others with her lifestyle. For British Muslims, she represented someone who, like them, was marginalized by the Establishment.
