China's new top brass sweep in like emperors
Article Abstract:
Chinese leaders have used the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty as a means of asserting their political authority. President Jiang Zemin adopted a rather triumphant tone at the official handover ceremony, and did not pay tribute to UK influence in Hong Kong. The handover ceremony was aimed as much at those inside China as at the outside world, and was undertaken extremely formally. Chinese officials have been unwilling to spend very long in Hong Kong, aware that there are considerable pro-democracy forces there.

Chinese unite as 150 years of humiliation end at last
Article Abstract:
The majority of ordinary people in China seem to share the view of the government and the Communist party that the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty will put an end to a period of great humiliation for China. There have been extensive preparations for celebrations in Peking, China, to mark the return of Hong Kong, and these have included cleaning up the city and removing beggars from its streets. These moves in particular have been welcomed by ordinary people.

Nationalist call is trump card in patriot game
Article Abstract:
A great deal of patriotic propaganda will surround the transfer of control over Hong Kong from the UK to China in Jul 1997. China has already begun to claim that regaining sovereignty over Hong Kong will balance out the historical injustices which it believes it has suffered as the hands of foreign and colonial powers. All key political operators in China will be seeking to derive benefits from the transfer of power in 1997.
