Cigarettes
Article Abstract:
Retail sales of cigarettes in the UK reached an estimated 12 billion pounds sterling in 1998. As a result of the government's policy of forcing up prices to discourage smoking, around 80% of the retail price of a packet is now accounted for by tax and duty. This has led to a decline in demand for high-priced cigarettes and a sharp rise in demand for low-priced cigarettes. The UK market is dominated by two companies: Gallaher, which markets the Benson and Hedges, Silk Cut and Berkeley brands, and Imperial Tobacco, which markets the Lambert and Butler, Superkings, Regal and Embassy brands.
