Vietnam party bosses get cold feet over reform
Article Abstract:
The Communist Party of Vietnam has allowed limited free market reforms to take place over recent years. The atmosphere in Vietnam is relatively relaxed for a communist country, and western goods are starting to be made available. However, there have recently been indications that the transition to a free market may be slowing down. This is party due to problems within the leadership of the Community Party, with delegates to the Party Congress being unable to agree on new occupants for leading positions.

The city with a broken heart
Article Abstract:
The city of Kobe, Japan, is generally seen as having recovered extremely well from the earthquake which struck in early 1995. Its residents remained calm, despited extensive homelessness, and the social effects of the disaster were therefore very limited. However, signs of problems are now beginning to emerge. Suicide and mental illness are rising, there are many legal difficulties, and ordinary people are beginning to criticise the way in which the city government handled the crisis.
