Communications firms see brighter prospects
Article Abstract:
The mobile telecommunications industry plans to move into a mass market. Cellular radio network operators Cellnet and Vodafone are experiencing net growth and Telepoint launched its Rabbit service in Manchester. Mercury Personal Communications will launch its Personal Communications Networks (PCN) service by 1994. Public access mobile radio is popular with consumers replacing their systems. The absence of a global standard and incompatible technologies are problems which are beginning to be solved.

BT's services were unable to cope with the volume of calls in mid-Jul 1993 when the talent show phone-in 'Stars in their Eyes' was broadcasted. Theft on phones is costing 50m pounds sterling a year
Article Abstract:
Around 15,000 mobile phones are reported stolen every month, and theft is costing the industry more than 50 million pounds sterling a year. Mobile phones are most frequently stolen from cars, and there are signs that organised gangs are involved. The owner of the stolen phone may well find that the theft is not covered by household or car insurance, and a replacement phone can cost much more than the price paid for the first one.
