Compaq's $10bn deal to buy Digital creates computer behemoth

Compaq Computer believes that its purchase of Digital Equipment in a deal worth $9.8 billion will allow it to create an operation offering a complete range of computing equipment and services. The company is already the largest supplier of personal computers in the world, while Digital is a top manufacturer of computers and network systems. The deal will involve Compaq issuing 150 million shares and paying $4.8 billion in cash. Digital's shareholders will receive $30 in cash and around 0.945 Compaq shares for each Digital share.
