Could someone explain why we are bombing Iraq?
Article Abstract:
The long-term goals of the policies of the UK and the US towards Iraq remain viable, but the current air attacks over north and south Iraq appear to be taking place in a vacuum. The UK government has failed to present any convincing political or strategic reasons for these attacks, which seem to be designed to completely destroy Iraq's air defence system. The government should make its plans in relation to Iraq much clearer, as the present secretive manoeuvring is having a negative impact on parliamentary democracy.

US pours in combat experts to train drug-busting squads of Colombia
Article Abstract:
Large numbers of US soldiers have been sent to Colombia to instruct that country's army on how to deal with guerrillas and drug barons. This is the largest US commitment in Latin America for many years, involving both troops and a wide range of equipment. There is also an aid package that could amount to $2 billion in the period to 2001 if the US Congress succeeds in pushing it through. It is clear that the US has now decided that it will be necessary to fight Colombia's guerrillas, as well as its drugs barons.
