Council cuts brought to book
Article Abstract:
The London borough of Merton will see its 2.6 million pounds sterling library budget reduced by 12.5% from Apr 01, 1995, and will have to make cutbacks at its showpiece, extremely modern Morden library. Merton is only one of many public library authorities which will be affected by budget cuts, and recent research indicates that 29 authorities plan to make at least 234 full and part-time librarians redundant. At Morden library, the fiction fund will not be reduced, but cutbacks will be made on student text-books, book binding and by purchasing paperbacks rather than hardbacks.

Article Abstract:
Tower Colliery, a shallow mine in south Wales, has proved extremely successful since it was purchased by employees from British Coal. Production is at a high level, and workers are receiving considerably higher salaries than those offered at other privatised mines. There is now great demand for jobs there, even from former miners who were previously determined never to work in a mine again. Many miners used their redundancy money to help purchase the mine, while others took out loans. There was also considerable support from other sources.

Article Abstract:
Trellick Tower, Kensinton, London is a 31-storey council housing block of 217 flats designed by Hungarian emigre Erno Goldfinger. He created large, airy flats with stable-doors to allow chatting. Originally there were a doctor's surgery, nursery school, club room, shops and landscaped gardens for the residents. In 1986 it was vey unpopular so the council only allocated flats to those who particularly wished to live there. This produced a comunity spirit, a tenants' association and refurbishment.
