Death is our best friend for life
Article Abstract:
Programmed cell death occurs naturally to allow new features to form. The Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) finds that programmed cell death means tumour cells are destroyed unless there are multiple mutations. Researchers hope to activate the self-destruct mechanism in all tumour cells. Genes control cell death. Scientists at the Roche Institute for Molecular Biology have found a gene (c-fos) which is activated in cells assigned to die. This may be useful in treating degenerative diseases including Alzheimer's.

Mad boffins and other science fictions
Article Abstract:
Many people regard scientists as being mad and out of touch with the real world, even though they are extremely clever. This view has developed because this is the way in which scientists are frequently portrayed in books, films and the media. Many people distrust scientists, and fail to understand that science forms the basis of everday life.
