Defence against racism
Article Abstract:
The report into the investigation of the murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence has highlighted a number of issues relating to attempts by lawyers to take private prosecutions. The private prosecution in this case certainly played a significant role in highlighting certain problems, including the impact of racial stereotypes on criminal investigations. The private prosecution did not help in bringing the suspects to justice, but that could not have been known when the decision was made to bring a private prosecution.

'The murder and the failure to convict is an affront to society.'
Article Abstract:
The Metropolitan Police made serious errors in the handling to the investigation into the racist murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence in Apr 1993, according to the report from the inquiry headed by Sir William Macpherson. Police officers were very patronizing towards Lawrence's parents and his friend Duwayne Brooks, who witnessed the murder, and there were clear indications of institutional racism. Furthermore, there was a lack of leadership on the part of senior officers.
