Democracy shivers on the frozen steppes
Article Abstract:
Mongolia has seen a peaceful transition from Communism to democracy since Jan 1990, but it has suffered severe economic problems as it has increasingly distanced itself from the Soviet Union. Industry has ground to a halt as a result of shortages of spare parts and machinery, there has been no international trade and many people are living below the official poverty line. The traditional socialist welfare state system has collapsed, and many children are no longer attending school because their parents cannot afford the fees.

Bangkok's long night of mayhem
Article Abstract:
Monday 18 May 1992 was a day of violent pro-democracy demonstrations in the centre of Bangkok. There were no leaders and thousands of people became dangerous crowds. The riot police were absent but the army took control by 6.30 a.m. After killing and shooting several people they rounded up all the protesters. The demonstrators demand the resignation of General Suchinda Kraprayoon, Prime Minister, who had the city cleared of protesters regardless of casualties.

So many women, so little time
Article Abstract:
There is a sharp contrast between the UN World Conference on Women and the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Forum which are both currently underway in China. The first has attracted well-dressed government negotiators, while the second has attracted many ordinary women. Around 23,500 foreigners have come to the NGO Forum, where a great many issues relating to women's rights are being discussed.
