Did Ingres use a camera?
Article Abstract:
It seems likely that Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres used some type of mechanical device for his drawings, which are on an almost unnaturally small scale. This may have been a camera lucida, which allows positions to be placed extremely accurately. Some art historians oppose this view, but the fact that Ingres may have used a camera lucide does not diminish the value of his work. It is interesting that Degas, who greatly admired Ingres, was fascinated with photography.
