Don't privatise the Tube by the back door, Mr Prescott
Article Abstract:
It is clear that transport will be one of the most urgent issues that the new mayor of London, England, will have to address. The city suffers from serious traffic congestion, causing environmental problems, and its public transport system is very unreliable. This is why Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has decided to allow London to be the testing ground for his new transport policy, with the new mayor being granted powers to deal with congestion. The most effective approach would be to improve public transport standards, rather than impose further penalties on motorists.

My blueprint to end the transport misery in London
Article Abstract:
The UK government's transport policy must focus on boosting the capacity and reliability of the transport system, thus ensuring that people are willing to travel by public transport, rather than use their car. Transport is a particularly sensitive issue in London, England, where the main challenge is finding funds to modernise the Tube in order to improve capacity on public transport. It may be appropriate to impose a modest congestion tax, which would encourage some drivers to switch to public transport.
