Malaysian car manufacturer Proton, which is set to make its millionth car in around Dec 1998, is looking to boost its export performance. It is aware that it will have to focus on efficient technology if it is to be competitive abroad. It is also planning for market changes which will arise as a result of the Free Trade Area of the Association of South East Asian Nations. It is keen to improve the image of its products, emphasizing that it is manufacturing a genuinely indigenous Malaysian car.

Car manufacturer Jaguar is currently in a very strong position, having benefited from substantial investment by Ford. Its workforce has almost halved since it was taken over by Ford in 1989, but output has almost doubled and the company has been in profit since the end of 1993. It has also benefited from working with RWD, a firm of external consultants which has a considerable number of former Toyota executives.
