Dublin's literati now rub shoulders with the digerati as Ireland's IT industry booms
Article Abstract:
Ireland has become a leading centre for production of computers and computer software. Most of the large US computer manufacturers have now based their European operations in Ireland, and around 60% of the packaged software sold in Europe comes from Ireland. Manufacturers were originally attracted by large government incentives, but average government funding per job created in 1996 was only 11,920 pounds sterling, among the lowest in Europe. The computer industry in Ireland has expanded so rapidly that skills shortages are now beginning to emerge.
