EU: MORE BSE TESTS MOOTED
Article Abstract:
The European Commission (EC) is proposing to extend its screening initiative for cattle to test for BSE amid increasing fears over the quality of beef across the European Union (EU), it emerged on 13 November 2000. The indications are that testing may encompass deceased cattle aged over 30 months, although there is uncertainty over whether the all the EU's 15 members will accept the move in discussions later in November 2000. Over 90 BSE cases have been uncovered in France, while the existing testing programme, scheduled to become compulsory at the start of 2001, envisages around 170,000 tests on dead cattle believed to be at risk.

New cattle cull ordered in battle to resume exports
Article Abstract:
The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Nick Brown, has announced that a new cull of the offspring of BSE-infected cattle that are over the age of two will begin in early August 1998. It is hoped that the scheme will improve the UK's chances of an early lifting of the ban on its beef exports. The aim of the culling is to restart exports from the autumn of 1998. Farmers whose cattle are to be culled will receive the market value for their animals from the Government.

UK: DECLINE IN BSE CASES REPORTED
Article Abstract:
Around 30 fresh cases of BSE are now being reported per month on average in the UK, down on the 1,000 per month uncovered in 1993 when the mad cow disease outbreak was at its worse, according to a study by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food. Scientists had predicted that BSE would decline, although it also emerged that the number of known cases of the human variant of the disease, vCJD, has risen to 74.
