Embarrassment of riches
Article Abstract:
The 105th season of the BBC Proms, which opens on Jul 16, 1999, covers a very wide range of music. However, Nicholas Kenyon, who plans the Proms, has also avoided compromising on core repertoire and new music. The Millennium has influenced two of the four themes for the 1999 Proms: 'lateness' and 'The Ascent of Man.' The other themes are French music and featured composer Carl Nielsen. There are a number of interesting initiatives, including a series of free music-and-talk events in the Serpentine Gallery.

Young, gifted and calling the tunes
Article Abstract:
Violinist Sarah Chang does not feel that playing the violin from a very early age robbed her of her childhood. She believes that her parents and her managers worked hard to ensure that she had an appropriate balance in her life. She found it hard to complete homework while also performing concerts, so welcomes the fact that she has now left school and can focus on performing. She is particularly looking forward to investigating new composers and newer works.
