End is nigh for mummified Marxists
Article Abstract:
Dr Sergei Debov is Moscow's most senior embalmer and is responsible for keeping Lenin's body preserved, looking as lifelike as possible in its mausoleum in Red Square. He trained as a doctor but has spent his life preserving the dead rather than healing the living. Lenin's corpse has a twice-weekly check-up when the hands and face have a fresh coat of embalming fluid. Every 18 months the body is removed and soaked for several days in a bath of preserving liquid. The secret is well-guarded and Western countries seem unable to preserve bodies as well as the people of the former Soviet Union.

The sorry tale of Agent Boot
Article Abstract:
A recent 'Sunday Times' report claimed that former Labour party leader Michael Foot was an agent of the KGB, which targeted Labour and trade union leaders in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The report was greeted with great scepticism, and the newspaper had to go back on its claims, stating that it had not said that Foot was an agent, only that the KGB believed he was an agent. The story is in fact most important for what it reveals about the new imperatives of the newspaper market, with newspapers desperate to increase readership going in search of publishers with titles to promote.
