Ericsson to axe 12,000 jobs as Nokia trims growth forecasts

Ericsson saw a 41% drop in unit sales of mobile phones in the first quarter of 2001. It is seeking to reduce costs, and this could affect up to 12,000 jobs. Nokia achieved a pre-tax profit of 878 million pounds sterling in the same period, but is cautious about the rest of the year.

The challenges continuing to face mobile phone manufacturers are discussed. Mobile phone handset penetration has now reached very high levels across most of Europe, and it seems likely that 2.5G will not boost the market as initially anticipated.
