Don't write off the euro - well, not just yet anyway
Article Abstract:
The weakness of the euro should be seen as a reflection of poor European economic performance, rather than as a cause of it. European economic weakness is particularly prevalent in Germany and Italy, both of which require lower interest rates to boost economic performance. The euro is part of Europe's economic problems, but should not be regarded as the entire problem. There are a number of factors likely to indicate whether the euro is a serious barrier to European economic recovery or merely a relatively insignificant complicating factor. These include whether consumer spending rises.

UK and Europe to the fore
Article Abstract:
Rapid structural changes are taking place within the economies of both Europe and the US, and this makes it difficult to interpret economic data reliably. However, there is evidence of economic revival in the UK and Europe. In contrast, the US economy is in danger of overheating. Any economic recovery in Europe will be extremely helpful in 2000. It seems unlikely that any other region of the world will see any significant degree of economic growth.
