Expecting too little could cost us a lot
Article Abstract:
There is growing concern in the UK that adults have very low expectations of children in relation to reading. It is common for literacy and literature to be confused, with adults assuming that merely having basic literacy skills is the same as reading. There is strong emphasis on children's reading levels, and this seems to impose an invisible barrier on what they can achieve. Furthermore, the literacy hour only permits children to read short extracts, with no expectation that they should read the whole book from which the extract is taken.

The worst years of their lives?
Article Abstract:
Many early-years specialists in the UK believe that formal education for four-year-olds is inappropriate. They support efforts by the government to provide the under-fives with a high standard of pre-school education, but do not agree with how this is being achieved. They feel that under-fives should not be taught in primary schools, and also believe that formal education is being introduced too early. There is extensive research evidence indicating that formal education is not really effective before the age of six or seven.

Our schoolchildren are still waiting, Mr Blair
Article Abstract:
There are a number of problems associated with the UK government's plans for a National Grid for Learning (NGfL). In particular, the government has failed to give full consideration to how this initiative will be funded and implemented. Before the NGfL is constructed, a national grid must be in place. Once this has occurred, then the NGfL's hardware and software must be controlled by strategists at the centre of the network. Libraries must form the core for the Intelligent School of the 21st century.
