US: WORLDCOM MAY SPIN OFF UUNET
Article Abstract:
WorldCom may spin off UUNet in order to obtain clearance in the US and Europe for its acquisition of the US-based long distance telecoms business, Sprint. UUNet is the largest Internet traffic carrier worldwide and is the most valuable asset to US-based long distance and data carrier, WorldCom, which is looking to buy Sprint for US$ 120bn. WorldCom regards the spin-off proposal as the only option to deal with fears among regulators over the merged group's hold over the Internet traffic market. The indications are that problems in dividing up the long distance network of Sprint from the Internet side have lessened the chances of the firm's Internet protocol network being sold by WorldCom after the merger is completed.
