FRANCE: INCREASE IN BSE
Article Abstract:
It has been revealed that three new cases of mad cow disease, or BSE, have been detected in France in just one week. Some 40,000 cattle carcasses have been analysed since 7 August 2000 as part of a programme of tests to identify the spread of the disease in France. The identification of three new cases brings the total so far this year to 34, compared to the total 30 cases found in 1999. It has been suggested that the researchers may find up to 120 cases of the disease by the end of 2000.

As tempers rise, a dispassionate guide to this battle over beef
Article Abstract:
Scientists in the UK oppose the decision by France not to lift its ban on the import of beef from the UK. They believe that there is no risk of BSE-contaminated beef entering France, as the only beef permitted for export from the UK under European Union-approved schemes is too young to have received the contaminated feed which is believed to be the cause of BSE. The BSE epidemic is declining in the UK, but could just be starting in the cattle of countries such as Ireland and Portugal.

Poison on our plates
Article Abstract:
The UK government failed to react appropriately to the dangers posed by BSE, according to Professor Richard Lacey. His new book reveals that the government was determined to avoid acknowledging the scale of the BSE crisis, as to do so would have had a negative impact on farmers and food producers. Lacey believes that the decision not to implement a major cattle slaughter programme in 1990 will eventually prove to be disastrous.
