Farms will become killing fields
Article Abstract:
Some observers are expressing doubts about whether the UK government will be able to meet a target of destroying 15,000 cattle every week. There are also concerns about the financial aspects of the programme, with costs possibly exceeding 2 billion pounds sterling over the next three years. The government is already aware that there is a severe lack of incineration facilities, and is may have to consider burying carcasses in authorised dumps or using household incinerators.

Government considers slaughtering up to 4.5 million
Article Abstract:
The UK government is currently considering how to eliminate the danger of BSE in cattle spreading to humans. It is possible that it will decide to order the slaughter of up to 4.5 million cattle. These will be older cattle, as BSE has been rare in cattle aged less than 30 months. The Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee is expected to recommend that the government issues a warning about the dangers of feeding beef and beef products to young children.

'Kill our cows and save farming.' (UK farmers accept need for large-scale incineration of cattle)
Article Abstract:
It will be necessary to remove at least 15,000 older cattle a week from the food chain in order to restore public confidence in British beef, farmers believe. The carcasses of the slaughtered cattle would be incinerated, instead of being used in meat products. It now seems possible that the government will give approval to this measure, which would cost 700 million pounds sterling a year.
