Forget reforms in Russia now, they'll never happen
Article Abstract:
New Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov has no political base and no experience of economics. He will probably be able to hold Russian politics together temporarily, but will not be able to prevent the country suffering a serious economic crisis. This crisis will lead to the disintegration of the Russian state and to rising political violence unless President Boris Yeltsin is replaced by a new president who has a strong power base and is elected by a more or less democratic process.

The giant who still casts a shadow over Russia
Article Abstract:
Tsar Peter the Great remains a significant and controversial figure in contemporary Russia. Russian President Boris Yeltsin regards Peter as a hero, but he is seen quite negatively in Moscow, Russia, a city he shunned. Many Russians long for the return of a strong leader like Peter, but it is most unlikely that even somebody of his stature would be able to resolve Russia's current extremely serious problems. It is clear that rule from above is not the best solution for Russia.
