A company man
Article Abstract:
Writing a libretto can be very complicated, and for this reason usually requires collaboration, according to composer Stephen Sondheim. He likes to work alone on songs, developing their lyrics and music simultaneously, but in other areas welcomes input from others. He has developed a unique ability to find an individual musical voice for each show, but is willing to add or drop songs on the advice of others. He is as much interested in the theatrical element of his work as in the musical element.
