Further into crisis
Article Abstract:
Many of the UK's further education colleges are facing severe problems, and some are even fighting to survive. They have been extremely successful in attracting young people who do not wish to stay on at school or who have failed to gain the qualifications they require to go on to higher education. Indeed, they enrol more full-time students aged 16-18 than all schools, and also attract many adults. However, they have suffered from a considerable lack of funding, and have been forced to make extensive savings.

Being first is not enough
Article Abstract:
The British Academy has so few postgraduate grants to offer that it requires a first-class degree and prefers students to move to a different institution. Applications for humanities studentships and the number of students gaining firsts increased in 1992. There were 1,080 applicants for 860 awards. A committee considers the value of the proposed research and whether the suggested location is the best place for it, among other things. Candidates are not told why they do not gain an award.

Postgrads come in from the cold
Article Abstract:
Postgraduate students pay high fees but are dissatisfied with the attention they receive. They have increased in numbers by 20.8% between 1985-6 and 1990-1991. There are 63,505 full-time postgraduates and 40,000 part-timers. Taught courses may bepoorly conceived. Those in research can have inadequate supervision, lack of facilities and suffer isolation. Common rooms would encourage more socialising and better departmental facilities would stop the commuting lifestyle.
