Fury erupts over lost Montserrat warning
Article Abstract:
It has been revealed that no action was taken to implement the findings of a 1987 report into the possibility of a volcanic eruption causing widespread damage on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, a British dependency. Key public buildings were rebuilt in Plymouth, the island's capital, following devastation caused by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, even though the report had recommended shifting vital services elsewhere, as Plymouth would be vulnerable in the event of a volcanic eruption. Taking action immediately after the report would have saved the UK large sums of money in emergency aid for Montserrat.

Officials blamed by arms inquiry
Article Abstract:
An official inquiry into the breaching of the Sierra Leone arms embargo has concluded that a number of officials, both at the Foreign Office and elsewhere, were aware that Sandline was selling military aid and arms to the exiled government of President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. However, they failed to inform UK government ministers. The report states that ministers and senior Foreign Office officials deliberately played down the embargo and the legislation which brought it into force in the UK.

Bringing back the lost class of '96
Article Abstract:
There was a 10% rise in the number of 16-year-olds in the UK in the period 1993-1995, but the number of GCSE exams taken fell by 1.1%. The proportion leaving school without any GCSEs at all was 8% in 1994 and 1995, from 7% in 1993. Some observers feel that schools are concentrating their attentions on pupils who are likely to achieve five or more A-C grades, while the less academic pupils lose out.
