Ghosts of the Raj that doomed a royal visit
Article Abstract:
The Queen's visit to India has encountered a number of significant diplomatic difficulties. The British are not greatly respected in many parts of India, especially as they seem to behave as if independence changed nothing. Despite this, there are extremely close cultural links between the UK and India. This closeness can serve to make the relationship more strained, as there are many things which cannot be said. It appears that only a democratically elected British head of state would receive a really warm welcome in India.

The legacy of midnight, marked in Britain, Pakistan and India
Article Abstract:
India celebrates 50 years of independence in 1997, and this celebration is for those who struggled for independence as well as Indians in Britain who have a dual identity. Partition followed independence, and some British Asians argue that the violence that followed was due to a lack of planning by a British government that simply sought to leave India. Many people did not realise that Partition would involve the creation of a separate state, Pakistan.

Peace, love and misunderstanding
Article Abstract:
The image of India and oriental culture which became fashionable in the 1960s was a false image. Musicians stole from Oriental music without acknowledging their sources. Indian society has a puritanical side which was ignored by the 1960s devotees of free love. They sought an antidote to the 1950s and to colonialism, by embracing sandalwood and Indian music, but did not truly understand Indian culture, though the image they presented was attractive.
