Gloves come off in fight for Liberty
Article Abstract:
Businessman Brian Myerson is trying to gain control of Liberty, the famous London store. He has built up a stake in the company and is trying to sell his plans for Liberty to the Stewart-Liberty family, who control the shares. Talks with the family, the board and financial advisors proved unsuccessful and Mr Myerson's bid was turned down. He then replaced the chief executive and proposed a rights issue. Existing executives wrote to shareholders denouncing Mr Myerson's plans. He plans to contact them also to outline his own ideas.

Taking a chance on a livewire idea
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom's regional electricity companies (RECs) are trying to seize a larger share of brown and white goods markets. They intend, by a series of joint ventures, to compete with established retailers. Most RECs are making losses or just surviving in spite of their solid reputation as installers and repairers of electrical goods. The mergers themselves will be expensive, resulting in redundancies, staff shake-ups and revision of computer systems. Some RECs plan to diversify into selling other goods or catalogue sales.
