Claret, favourite tipple of Britain's drinking classes, condemned as plonk
Article Abstract:
Wines from the Bordeaux region of France have long been favored by the English, but a survey by Which magazine rejected 36 of 39 such claret wines priced at under 10 pounds sterling as very poor. Red wine from Latin America and Australia offers better value, the experts argue. Duty paidon wine is high in Britain, and this may mean that supermarkets focus on price more than quality. Wine merchants argue that supermarkets may have problems in finding large amounts of good quality wine, but they also see much cheap claret wine as poor quality.
