Greedy Americans and nice, wet Europeans - the politics of weather
Article Abstract:
There are many complicated issues behind the concerns about global warming that will be raised at the forthcoming Kyoto Climate Summit. Scientists are unable to give any firm indications about how quickly climate change will take place, and this makes it very difficult to hold meaningful negotiations. It is not possible to put a complete stop to climate change, and to do so immediately would not be feasible in any case, as economies across the world are highly dependent on fossil fuels. Those attending the summit should focus on measures to slow down the rate of climate change.

Elephant victims of bloodlust safaris
Article Abstract:
There are many wealthy tourists, especially from the US and Germany, who are willing to pay large sums of money to be allowed to participate in big game-hunting expeditions in African countries including Tanzania and Kenya. A number of countries now issue permits for big game-hunters to shoot elephants, bringing in valuable income for the government. The ban on international trading in ivory has led to a rise in elephant numbers, and now even some wildlife conservationists admit that limited elephant shooting is necessary.

Why isn't the world's motor industry willing to produce a car like this?
Article Abstract:
Environmental group Greenpeace has presented a challenge to car manufacturers with the launch of its 'Smile' environmentally-friendly car. This is a modified Renault Twingo which can obtain almost twice as many miles a gallon as an ordinary Twingo and cars of a similar size. It requires no unusual technology, and could in fact be cheaper to produce than an ordinary car. However, car manufacturers feel that customers would not be willing to pay any more for a modified car.
