Grocery shopping habits
Article Abstract:
The UK grocery shopping sector continues to be dominated by supermarkets, with over 60% of consumers using in-town or out-of-town outlets. Decreasing numbers of small convenience stores and fresh food retailers are a continuing trend, with non-specialists accounting for 83% of all retail food sales. Small format stores are increasingly unable to meet the needs of shoppers, whose main requirement is convenient access and parking. It is forecast that UK food sales will rise from 46.53 billion pounds sterling in 1997 to 55.12 billion pounds sterling in 2002.

Retail practises and operational issues
Article Abstract:
The most important issue affecting U.K. food retailers in the recent past has been the subject of competitive pricing. The major multiples have responded to the entry to the U.K.market of European discounters by cutting prices and introducing cheaper, budget ranges. However, the discounters' rapid expansion did not materialize, while retailers have found it difficult to abandon their pricing policies. An analysis of key issues facing food retailers is presented.
