Has the time come to curb this racecourse carnage?
Article Abstract:
The UK's Grand National horse race attracts a great deal of media coverage, and is highly respected as a unique sporting event. However, it is also possible to argue that the horses entered for the race are subjected to considerable cruelty. This was particularly the case with the 1998 Grand National, when heavy rain made conditions extremely tough and three horses died on the course. The conditions were not too tough for the best horses, but a number of horses were entered for the race simply in order to boost the status of their owners. The deaths of a small number of horses are not sufficient justification to ban the Grand National altogether.

Militia kills 13 in East Timor carnage
Article Abstract:
Pro-Indonesia militiamen killed at least 13 people after entering the house of Manuel Carrascalao, a leader of the pro-independence movement, in Dili, East Timor, on Apr 17, 1999. The Indonesian military claims that the militiamen were provoked into violence by the aggressive stance of independence activists. There have also been clashes elsewhere in Dili between militia members and separatist fighters. Many in the town believe that nationalists in the army are using the militias to stop a referendum on independence for East Timor.
