Article Abstract:

Many country house owners do not have archivists and ignore pictures and furniture which have always been there, but Lady Victoria Leatham of Burghley House, Lincolnshire, England, is an expert on Japanese porcelain and is exhibiting 'Ten Years of Discoveries' until Oct 4 1992. Changes in taste, new acquisitions and ignorance cause the neglect of valuable items. Lady Leatham discovered a Kakeimon group used as a doorstop; the National Trust discovered the Ceolfrith Leaf, the first piece of English writing, used to cover a book at Kingston Lacey, Dorset.

Everyday objects of desire

Article Abstract:

The exhibition entitled 'Now Wash Your Hands,' currently being held at the Arnolfini in Bristol, England, looks at the use of domestic objects in art. This trend is now very different from in the 1950s and 1960s, when Pop art first began to emerge. Today, domestic objects are a very familiar element of art, and artist no longer have to justify their presence. The exhibition includes a painting of detergent bottles by Stephen Skidmore.

Article Abstract:

Many French Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings were seized by Russian troops during the second world war and sent to Russia 'for safe keeping.' In Germany, these were among around 2 million works of art and artefacts which were removed as Russia took revenge for what it saw as attempted cultural genocide by Germany. These are now starting to emerge again, and are being put on public display.
