How TV-dinners show the decline of all that right-thinkers value
Article Abstract:
The UK Social Affairs Unit's book 'Faking It: The Sentimentalisation of Modern Society' highlights the extent to which certain right-wing elements have failed to accept that life has changed. The book is critical of trends including environmentalism, child-centred learning, alternative medicine and the sanitization of homosexuality, and expresses regret for the decline of what it identifies as dependable institutions. It identifies certain elements in modern society as fake, while others would seen them as post-modern. Where it sees sentimentality, others would see only cynicism.

Booze: Britain's real drug crisis
Article Abstract:
Considerable media attention is given in the UK to illegal drugs and the problems they can cause. In contrast, alcoholism, which is much more widespread than drug abuse, receives little publicity. Politicians ignore alcoholism because significant amounts of revenue are raised in the form of tax on alcoholic drinks, and nothing is being done to tackle the very serious repercussions alcoholism has for society. The fact that young people are turning to alcohol at an increasingly early age should be a cause for great concern.

Don't just look to visible abuse, what we take for granted counts more
Article Abstract:
Child abuse attracts media attention, yet there are other aspects of how children are treated that deserve more attention. United Kingdom parents work very long hours, and this leaves them with little time for their children. A culture dominated by cars is not good for children, many of whom are killed by cars. Children are vulnerable and have a right to expect more. Our culture should value children rather than looking down on them and people such as teachers who care for them.
