Afghanistan's national airline, Ariana, was effectively under the control of Osama bin Laden and his al-Qa'ida terrorist network, according to Afghan sources. Ariana was used to transport equipment, weapons and foreign militants from the Gulf to training facilities in Afghanistan, and it is possible that the airline was also used to train Islamic militants as pilots.
