Suicide rates among young Asian women from various classes and religions in the UK are double the national average, and this has served to reinforce the widely held view that these women are repressed and treated very badly by their in-laws. In fact, many are extremely powerful, and the strong Asian family can in fact bring advantages. There are sometimes disagreement between family members, but they work together and the women share the burden of household tasks.
