MPs find it extremely difficult to maintain relationships, according to UK Junior Environment Minister Angela Eagle, who has come out as a lesbian. MPs need to devote a great deal of time to their work, and this can mean that their families suffer. She has a long-term relationship, but often finds it hard to spend time with her partner. She has not deliberately hidden her sexuality, but feels that it is not relevant to her work. She has found that the Labour party has been very supportive.

The behaviour of the UK Royal Family since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, has highlighted the extent to which it seems to be unable or unwilling to judge the public mood. Leading members of the Royal Family seem determined to come through this tragedy without showing any emotion at all, in sharp contrast to the great emotion shown by ordinary Britons. In adopting this stance, the Royal Family is simply distancing itself even further from the general public.
