IRELAND: COMPETITION FOR THIRD MOBILE LICENCE
Article Abstract:
Plans to award third-generation mobile telephone licences in Ireland are expected to attract interested from British Telecom (BT), NTL and Orange from the UK. BT already owns Esat Telecom, the second-largest phone operator in Ireland, while NTL owns Cablelink, Ireland's largest cable operator. Orange failed in an earlier bid for a mobile licence. Irish companies Meteor and Eircom are also potential bidders. The Irish government will award the licences according to the quality of the applications, rather than on an auction basis as in the UK, and the licences are expected to be worth over GB[pound] 200mn each. There will be four licences in total, of which one will be reserved for a new entrant.

Direct links with Asia and Europe
Article Abstract:
Significant developments are taking place in the Georgian telecommunications sector as a result of efforts to establish direct links with the international communications network. There is now a mobile telephone network covering 70% of the country, and full coverage will be achieved in 1999. There are more than 250,000 lines in Tbilisi, the capital, around half of which are on modern digital exchanges. A key development has been participation in the Trans-Asia-Europe project, which will link China, Asia and Europe.
