Ideal for student occupation
Article Abstract:
The London School of Economics needs new buildings, especially a larger library, and the County Hall complex offers almost exactly what it needs. The London Residuary Body (LRB) has been trying to sell the whole County Hall complex since 1986 and has signed a deal with a Japanese developer, not to be completed until 1993. Although English Heritage, the Royal Fine Art Commission and the South Bank Centre support the idea as it would make few alterations to the architecture and the 4,500 students would bring a lot of trade, the LRB is under pressure from the government to find a private buyer.

The outer darkness
Article Abstract:
Local residents in South Kensington, London, England, have expressed concern about the planned Wellcome Wing, an extension to the Science Museum which would open in 2000. They are particularly worried about the possibility of the new building blocking daylight. The fact that local people can object to planned developments in the UK is to be welcomed, but this seems to be a case in which objections are being taken too seriously. The planned building will in fact greatly enhance a site which is currently a derelict eyesore.

The new cubism
Article Abstract:
The redevelopment of Oxo Wharf Tower, situated near Waterloo Station in the centre of London, is regarded as a significant step forward for community architecture. The building, which had stood empty for some time, was purchased by Coin Street Community Builders (CSCB), which has now completed a development which includes low rental housing association flats, small shops, cafes and community offices. It is viewed as a very positive way of bringing life back to this part of London.
