If the prize is right
Article Abstract:
Jon Webster, Managing Director of Virgin International, organised the first annual Mercury Music Prize for contemporary music from Great Britain and Ireland in a similar way to the Booker Prize for books. Record companies nominate albums released between Jun 1991 and Jun 1992 from which a panel of nine judges will select 10, to be announced on Jul 13 1992. Mercury Communications is to present the prize on Sep 8 1992. Mercury feels it is as easy for a new musician to win as for an established one. Criteria for excellence avoids sales figures and circumstantial evidence, but it is difficult to compare different styles of music. The music is judged on what achievements the musician pursued and their success.

It's all right - he's on the label
Article Abstract:
Rod Stewart made 'Rod Stewart, Unplugged' for the satellite video channel MTV which makes programmes of pop stars performing their hits without electrical instruments. The soundtracks are often released as albums afterwards. Rod has a soft rasp and a cockney accent. His voice has improved with age because he looks after it: he does not smoke or take drugs, but he does drink. His voice is affected by rape pollen in the hayfever season. He enjoys acting the comedian in the Max Miller style and will do so in America when touring with the 'Unplugged' show.

Adulation guaranteed - 'Or-right?' (Mick Jagger) (Interview)
Article Abstract:
Each of the Rolling Stones except Bill Wyman made solo albums in 1992. Mick Jagger wrote his own songs for his album 'Wandering Spirit' at home in the Loire Valley, France. He and Keith Richards will start writing for the next Stones album in March 1993 in Keith's Connecticut home as it is city music. Mick Jagger's favourite songs to perform are 'Sympathy for the Devil,' 'Start Me Up' and 'Ruby Tuesday.' He has learnt to warm his voice up before a performance to avoid throat problems.
