Afghanistan's Northern Alliance is making renewed attacks on troops fighting for the country's ruling Taliban regime. Many years of fighting have left Afghanistan's infrastructure almost totally destroyed, with most people living in very difficult conditions.

Afghanistan's opposition Northern League is considering how it may benefit from the anticipated US military action against the country's Taliban regime. The Northern League is likely to be strengthened, but gaining overall control in Afghanistan is very difficult because of its huge mountain ranges.
