In the den of The Lion of Panjshir
Article Abstract:
The mujahedin commander, Ahmed Shah Massoud, 39, permanently travels in a curtained Toyota Land-Cruiser although during the jihad against the soviet occupation he stayed at his fortress in the Panjshir valley. Commanders come to him, not he to them. His excellent fighting abilities forced the Russians out so an Islamic government could be installed, although he has no personal political ambitions. He is now considering how to remove the Kabul government and install a mujahedin government and how to reassure the Pathans.

Cambodia: the UN promise fails
Article Abstract:
The first democratic election in Cambodia since 1950 takes place on May 23, 1993. The Khmer Rouge is boycotting the election. The Phnom Penh government aims to win, but might have to join with the United Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful and Co-operative Cambodia (Funcinpec) royalist party. The United Nations peace mission aims for 'the minimum acceptable condition for free and fair elections.' The outcome may result in further civil war.
