UK: EC STEPS UP PRESSURE ON SELLAFIELD
Article Abstract:
The European Commission has criticised the UK over safety lapses at British Nuclear Fuels' Sellafield power plant, in the form of an outspoken and public condemnation by Margot Wallstrom, the European environment commissioner. The comments will be an embarrassment to the UK Government, which is also facing international pressure from Ireland, Denmark and other Nordic countries concerned about radioactive contamination of fishing waters.

UK: GOVERNMENT ADMISSION OVER SELLAFIELD
Article Abstract:
The UK government revealed on 21 June 2000 that by 2020, major discharges of radioactive materials would be made from British Nuclear Fuels' Sellafield facility. The admission did not please environmental groups as it contrasted with a pledge made in 1998 by Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, that such discharges would be halted. Maintaining production at the Thorp reprocessing facility together with dealing with the eradication of nuclear waste will lead to the Sellafield plant emitting around 30% of current discharges in 20 years, despite efforts to reduce radioactive discharges.

Inside building B33, Britain's most risky recycling operation may be going wrong
Article Abstract:
British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL) has admitted that there have been 'irregularities' in the testing of mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel pellets at its MOX Demonstration Facility in Sellafield, England. It has also been claimed that the plant's safety records have been falsified, leading to unchecked and potentially very harmful pellets being used in fuel assemblies intended for Japanese nuclear power stations. Some 40 fuel assemblies have already been made for Japan, and the discovery of defects would have serious repercussions for the nuclear power industry.
