EU: NEW RULES ON SUPPLY AND DISTRIBUTION DEALS

Article Abstract:

Guidelines were accepted by the European Commission (EC) on 24 May 2000, which will have a fundamental impact on distribution and supply arrangements covering a wide array of markets. New rules will offer anti-trust approval on an automatic basis for franchising, selective distribution and industrial supply deals involving businesses whose share of a market is under 30%. The measures, which will have a major impact on the oil and beer markets in particular, should be introduced on 1 June 2000.

UK: ID CARD PLAN FOR TEENAGERS

Article Abstract:

A swipecard containing information including date of birth will be put forward on 26 September by UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, as part of moves to combat smoking and drinking among children. Ministers say that the proposed proof-of-age card may have a marked impact on the amount of youngsters illicitly purchasing alcohol or tobacco. The Portman Group has drawn up a proof-of-age card initiative, which may apply to all 16-year olds, with a law covering sales in newsagents, supermarkets, public houses and off-licences.

Interbrew left stunned as Byers orders disposal of Bass Brewers

Article Abstract:

UK Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Stephen Byers has indicated that Belgian brewing firm Interbrew should be obliged to sell Bass Brewers to a purchaser approved by Director General of Fair Trading John Vickers. This follows a Competition Commission decision that Interbrew's purchase of Bass Brewers will force up prices.
