It is 50 years old, but what has Nato got to celebrate?
Article Abstract:
Nato, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in Apr 1999, has had some significant achievements. Indeed, it can justifiably claim to have fulfilled all its original goals. This means that the Allies have been forced to consider since the late 1980s how to reconstruct Nato to address a completely new world order. Some observers have expressed the view that Nato should be dismantled altogether, but this seems very unlikely to happen, especially in the light of the conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, which will almost certainly require a long-term commitment to the Balkans.

Women beheaded in Saudi execution frenzy
Article Abstract:
Human rights organization Amnesty International continues to condemn Saudi Arabia for its executions, which usually follow trials in semi-secret courts. There have been 55 executions so far in 1999, including two Nigerian women accused of drug trafficking. Saudi Arabia's executions take place without comment from the West, which has troops based there and extensive oil investments. Executions also take place in other Muslim countries, including Kuwait, Yemen and Iran.
