Italy waits for the gravy train to be derailed
Article Abstract:
The Italian railway system seems to be modern and efficient, but regular travellers by rail actually encounter many difficulties. The electricity system frequently fails, and railway bureaucracy is extremely inefficient. The system runs at a considerable loss, even when there are no technical problems. Losses are now running at around 4 trillion lire a year, and this has prompted railways chairman Giancarlo Cimoli to promise to reduce the resources being used by senior management.

Nation waits as Papandreou weakens
Article Abstract:
Greek prime minister Andreas Papandreou had appeared to be recovering from an attack of pneumonia, but has now suffered a relapse and has had to be placed on a kidney dialysis machine and an artificial respirator. Official bulletins strike a positive note, but it is clear that a new era is soon to begin in Greek politics, even if he survives. His health has become the main preoccupation of ordinary people, reflecting the hold he has over Greek public life.

Papandreou's death proves pure politics
Article Abstract:
Andreas Papandreou, who stood down as Greek prime minister in Jan 1996 because of poor health, has now died from a cardiac seizure. He approached politics with great determination, and his own battle against illness reflected this. Until the very end, he was determined to play a key role in Greek politics, and wanted to create difficulties for Costas Simitis, his successor.
