Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, has used the case against Gholamhossein Karbaschi, the mayor of Tehran, Iran, who has been sentenced to five years in prison for corruption, as a way of protecting himself against the allies of reforming President Mohamed Khatami, a friend of Karbaschi. There has been extensive media coverage of the case and of Karbaschi's appeal against his sentence. However, Khamenei is making a strong counter-attack.

Cleaning up Tehran is a key task, according to Gholam Hossein Karbaschi, the mayor of the city. Over the six years since he became mayor, Tehran's parks have been replanted, streets have been cleaned and measures take to reduce traffic jams. Action has also been taken to reduce police corruption and improve public transport. However, problems may start to re-emerge if inflation continues to rise, as the city's budget will have to be cut.

Tehran tries to come in from the cold

There are signs of a more lenient regime emerging in Tehran, Iran. New shopping malls and cinemas are being constructed, and a real, competitive newspaper, Jamiyah, has been created. Iran as a whole is becoming a much more normal country, but President Mohamed Khatami still faces the considerable challenge of dealing with the country's economy. The Iranian government still has strict conditions for holding talks with the US.
