John Aitkenhead
Article Abstract:
John Aitkenhead, the founder of Kilquhanity House School, Scotland, was a keen educationalist who believed schools should be self-governed by both teachers and students. Aitkenhead was Head Teacher of the school during 1940-1997, before which time he had become increasingly frustrated with the teaching style practiced in secondary schools. Aitkenhead initially based Kinquhanity on A.S. Neill's Summerhill School, but he later developed Kinquhanity in his own style. The school had a therapeutic style of government that taught charity and tolerance, with all children responsible for their own education.
